The Ming Xuande Three-legged Bridge-ear Censer is a treasured masterpiece among handed-down bronze censers and a representative ritual artifact in the Xuande bronze ware system. Drawing inspiration from ancient ritual vessels, this censer features a pair of bridge-shaped ears erected above the rim, gently flaring outward like a flying bridge across the mouth. Its belly swells broadly and tapers down smoothly, supported by three stout nipple-shaped feet. The proportion of the vessel is exquisitely balanced, free from ostentation or fragility, combining the solemnity of ritual bronzes and the mild elegance of literati ornaments. It embodies the supreme ancient aesthetic that simplicity is beauty. Originally used for incense burning in worship and study display, bridge-ear censers have been cherished by collectors and scholars across dynasties. Placed on a desk with burning incense, it carries the ancient spiritual pursuit of reverence, self-cultivation and remembrance of antiquity.

The censer is cast from refined copper, which is compact and pure after repeated smelting, solid and weighty to hold, the distinctive material feature of Xuande censers. The whole body is covered with naturally mature handed-down patina in warm golden chestnut yellow. Its luster is restrained and subtle, not superficial brightness, but formed by long-term oxidation and polishing by generations of collectors. The surface texture is delicate with naturally varied shades. Traces of time spread all over the censer. Every shift of colour bears marks left by long years and the care of successive owners. Smooth to touch and tranquil to behold, the metallic sharpness of copper is softened by time, forming quiet and primitive mild texture. This unique aesthetic belongs exclusively to handed-down ancient bronze, accumulated and condensed by years of nourishment.

The bridge ears are the highlight of the censer. Both ends of the arch-shaped ears connect to the rim, forming soft and full curves, integrated seamlessly with the body without stiff joint traces. The bridge shape carries philosophical thoughts of ancient literati. A bridge symbolizes connection and salvation. Ancient scholars placed this censer in their studies to reflect on themselves, representing openness and modesty. The full and round belly has stretching curved surface to hold incense ashes. Its contour flows smoothly from rim to feet. The simple lines without redundant decorations reveal the profound beauty of antiquity. The three nipple-shaped feet at the bottom are short and solid, supporting the vessel steadily. Slightly flaring outward, they form visual balance with the bridge ears, embodying ingenious mechanical design within simplicity. Ancient craftsmen valued plainness over gorgeous ornament. This censer perfectly interprets the traditional aesthetic philosophy that supreme craftsmanship appears unadorned.

The inscription “Made in Xuande Reign of the Great Ming Dynasty” is carved on the base, with dignified and neat characters. The carving is steady and crisp, with deep and clear strokes integrated with the copper body, carved during the casting of the censer. The inscription serves as its identity mark, recording its era. Later collectors appreciate the vessel by examining inscription, copper texture and shape to understand its historical heritage. Since its creation, Xuande censers abandoned dense patterns of ancient ritual bronzes and focused on plain copper bodies, elevating the beauty of copper material and contour art to new heights. In the Ming Dynasty, Xuande bronze censers were used for temple sacrifices and incense burning in studies. Wispy smoke from the censer was used to worship sages and calm the mind. More than an incense burner, it materialized the spiritual world of Ming literati, merging rituals, aesthetics and the charm of life in one bronze vessel.

Casting Xuande bronze censers involved complicated and rigorous procedures, including material selection, smelting, mould-making, pouring and polishing, demanding rich experience of craftsmen. Copper materials were refined many times to remove impurities. Using the lost-wax casting method, after the copper liquid cooled, craftsmen repeatedly polished the vessel to erase casting marks and smooth the contours. A qualified Xuande censer required tremendous labour and was hard to accomplish. This Three-legged Bridge-ear Censer has survived hundreds of years intact, free from severe damage, with naturally formed patina, a precious surviving relic of Ming bronze ware. Over centuries, it passed through successive collectors, standing quietly in halls and studies, witnessing the changes of the world. It accumulates profound heritage through repeated incense burning and gentle handling.

Today, this Ming Xuande Three-legged Bridge-ear Censer remains calm and dignified. Gazing at its warm patina and touching the primitive copper surface, we can cross time and perceive the minimalist creation philosophy of Ming craftsmen. Though incense smoke has faded with years, the ritual culture and literati aesthetic carried by the censer endure forever. It embodies the superb bronze casting craftsmanship of the Ming Dynasty, acting as physical evidence of ancient Chinese bronze civilization. It quietly tells the oriental sentiment of ancient people pursuing tranquility and self-reflection amid curling incense hundreds of years ago.
